Born in 1966, Peter van Dongen is a Dutch illustrator and graphic novelist from Amsterdam. He won the Dutch Stripschap prize for his albums Muizentheater and the two-part Rampokan, which recounts the story of Dutch soldier Johan Knevel during Indonesia's war for independence and explores the history of the Dutch Indies, the land of Van Dongen's ancestors. He is known for his use of the "ligne claire" (clear line) drawing style in the tradition of Hergé and E.P. Jacobs. In 2017, Van Dongen worked with Teun Berserik on albums 25 and 26 of the Blake and Mortimer series originally drawn by E.P. Jacobs. In 2018, Aire Libre published the collected volumes of Rampokan. In 2020, Europe Comics republished the English translation of the masterpiece.
