Europe Comics is proud to present its first panel at the Angoulême International Comics Festival:
IS THERE SUCH A THING AS EUROPEAN COMICS?
Do “European” comics exist today? Industry professionals from the Continent and beyond share their visions and insight.
Comics have been emerging and evolving across Europe since the start of the 20th century, but it was in French, under the term bande dessinée or “BD,” that these creations started taking more and more space in the cultural landscape, alongside American comics and Japanese manga. Where do things stand today? What will become of the genre tomorrow? Is it possible to define a kind of “European” comics, real or imagined? An international panel of experts and professionals come together to discuss. Presented by Europe Comics, a collaborative digital imprint in English comprising publishers from across the continent, born from the desire to increase the visibility of European comics internationally.
With Thierry Smolderen (Gypsy, Ghost Money), Thomas Ragon (Dargaud, France), Klaus Schikowski (Carlsen Comics, Germany), Pawel Timofiejuk (Timof Comics, Poland), Paul Gravett (Graphic Novels: Everything You Need to Know, 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die) and Karen Green (Columbia University). Moderated by Matteo Stefanelli (Lucca Comics & Games, Italy).
The panel will be held in English and will take place at the Rights and Licensing Market at 2:30PM
Ahead of this year’s Translation Slam at Lucca Comics & Games 2018, don’t miss the Europe Comics panel discussion about the growing presence of European comics beyond the continent’s borders, “Exporting Comics: How European Comics Travel the World.” Participants will include Sophie Castille (International Rights Manager, Mediatoon), Italian publishers Michele Foschini (BAO) and Massimiliano Clemente (Tunue), and American translator Jamie Richards (Kobane Calling, Lion Forge).
